Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting: What Is the Difference?

Modern office ready for disinfection

A surface can look spotless and still carry germs, and a disinfected surface can still be dirty. Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting do different jobs, and using the right one in the right place is what keeps a home or office healthy.

01

Cleaning removes dirt

Soap or detergent and water lift dust, grease and grime off a surface. It removes many germs along with the dirt but does not set out to kill them.

02

Sanitising lowers germs to a safe level

It reduces the number of germs on a surface. It is the usual choice for kitchens, dining tables and anything that touches food.

03

Disinfecting kills germs

A disinfectant is designed to kill bacteria and viruses on a surface. It is the right choice for bathrooms, bins and anything touched by many hands.

04

Always clean first

Dirt and grease shield germs from disinfectant. A dirty surface that is sprayed and wiped has not been properly disinfected.

05

Give the product time to work

Most disinfectants need to stay wet on the surface for several minutes, as stated on the label. Spraying and wiping straight away undoes most of the benefit.

06

Focus on the touch points

Door handles, light switches, remote controls, lift buttons, taps, phones and desks are where germs spread. They matter more than floors and walls.

07

Never mix products

Bleach mixed with other cleaners can release dangerous fumes. Use one product at a time and keep the room ventilated.
