How Often Should You Clean Your Water Tank?

Most villas and buildings in Dubai store water in a tank before it reaches your taps. In the heat, a tank that is not cleaned regularly can build up sediment, algae and bacteria — and that is the water you shower in, wash dishes with and brush your teeth with.

01

Clean it every six months

Twice a year is the commonly recommended schedule for the UAE climate. A good routine is once before summer and once after.

02

Know the warning signs

Cloudy or discoloured water, a bad smell or taste, grit in the tap filters, or skin irritation and hair fall after showering all suggest the tank needs attention.

03

Keep the lid sealed

A loose or cracked lid lets in dust, insects and sunlight. Sunlight in particular encourages algae to grow.

04

Do not forget the pipes and filters

Cleaning the tank alone is not enough. The outlet pipes should be flushed, and tap aerators and shower filters rinsed afterwards.

05

Ask what the cleaning includes

A proper job means draining, removing sludge, scrubbing the walls, disinfecting, rinsing and refilling — not just a quick rinse.

06

Plan for a few hours without water

Cleaning a villa tank typically takes two to three hours. Fill a few containers beforehand for drinking and washing.
