Repair or Replace? How to Decide When Your AC Is Failing

No one wants to replace an air conditioner before they have to, and no one wants to keep paying for repairs on a unit that is finished. These questions help you decide which side of the line you are on.

01

How old is it?

Air conditioners in Dubai run for most of the year, so they age faster than in milder climates. Once a unit is past ten years or so, replacement deserves serious thought.

02

How often does it break down?

One repair in several years is normal. Calling a technician every summer is a pattern, and the next failure is rarely far away.

03

What does the repair cost?

A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit, replacing is usually the better use of the money.

04

Is it the compressor?

The compressor is the heart of the system and the most expensive part. On an older unit, a failed compressor is often the point where replacement makes more sense.

05

What is happening to your bills?

Older units use noticeably more electricity than modern inverter models for the same cooling. Rising bills with the same usage are part of the real cost of keeping it.

06

Which refrigerant does it use?

Many older units run on R22 gas, which has been phased out and is increasingly expensive to top up. A leak on an R22 system is a strong reason to replace.

07

Does it still keep you comfortable?

Rooms that never quite cool, uneven temperatures and constant noise are signs of a unit that is worn out or was never the right size.
